What is lock rekeying and when do you need it?

Lock rekeying is a way to change the inner components of a lock. Changing the inner components of a lock involves removing and changing pins in the inner chamber. The old key will no longer work as a result. Thus making it a more affordable option since the whole lock does not have to be replaced. Additionally having a lock rekeyed is beneficial because, we can make any key you want fit the rekeyed lock.

There are many reasons you may want to have your lock rekeyed. An instance in which you may want to rekey your lock is when you want to keep the lock hardware. Sometimes older locks are especially hard to find a replacement for. Other times, you may have just moved somewhere and want to avoid the cost of replacing locks. Lastly, you may be a business or property owner wants to avoid the cost of replacing locks.

Should you rekey your locks?

Rekeying locks can save you time and money. However, sometimes rekeying is not an option. One reason why you may not be able to have your lock rekeyed is that the lock is in bad condition. In this case, the lock is beyond repair and should just be replaced. Another reason a lock should be replaced is that the lock is so dated that the security of the lock is weak.

If the lock has to be replaced due to a condition, we will let you know ahead of time. See our lock replacement page for more information. If your lock is dated and cannot be rekeyed we will suggest replacing the lock. Lastly, if you wish to upgrade your locks we will suggest replacing the lock with a high-security lock.
